Ksenia Merck Joins the Grief Observed Podcast
A Conversation About Grief, Creativity, and What Comes Next
Ksenia Merck, an architect, artist, and creative storyteller, joined Brad Murrell on the Grief Observed Podcast for a conversation about grief, creativity, and the work she continues following the loss of her husband, Bill. Ksenia has spent 40 years working in architecture, design, and construction, but she shared how the loss of both her mother and husband brought her creative side into a new focus. Her mother, a World War II veteran who lived to 102, spent her final 14 years living with Ksenia and Bill, with Ksenia helping care for her during that time.
Bringing Bill's Final Book to Life
A major part of the conversation centered on Bill and the work he left behind. Bill was a leader, mentor, storyteller, and author who spent much of his career helping others grow. Before his passing, he completed Ghostflower, a story involving time travel, connections across centuries, and the search for a cure to a future pandemic. While in the hospital, Bill remained determined to see the book published. After his death, Ksenia took on that responsibility, working with the editor and choosing to release the book on Bill's birthday, October 14.
How Art Became Part of the Grieving Process
Working on Ghostflower also led Ksenia to create a collection of artwork connected to the story. She produced 44 sketches and paintings, which eventually became the foundation for the Ghostflower Companion Journal. The journal includes the artwork, the personal experiences and ideas behind the sketches, and questions connected to the philosophical and spiritual themes in the book. Ksenia spoke openly about how creating the artwork became part of her grieving process and gave her a way to feel connected to Bill. The twin-star image on the journal's cover holds particular meaning for her, representing what she describes as one soul and two hearts.
Continuing the Work Through Merck to Press
Ksenia is now continuing to write, create art, and develop new projects through Merck to Press. She is exploring topics including grief, creativity, and the role art can play in the healing process, while also working to carry forward the purpose behind the projects she and Bill began. Her conversation with Brad offers an honest look at how loss can change the way we create and how continuing meaningful work can become part of moving forward.
