A Conversation About Love, Loss, and Finding Your Way Forward

Ksenia Merck joined Stephanie on the Joy Found Here podcast for a personal conversation about love, grief, creativity, and what it means to continue moving forward after losing someone you love. Ksenia shared the story of her late husband, William F. Merck II, and how their relationship, his writing, and the experiences surrounding his passing continue to influence her life. Their conversation also explores the idea that joy can still have a place alongside grief, especially when we find meaningful ways to stay connected to the people and work that matter to us.

Bringing Bill's Story Forward

William Merck II Author or Ghostflower

A major focus of the episode is Ghostflower, the science fiction novel Bill wrote before his passing. The story follows a team traveling from the future back to 1585 with a mission to help protect humanity's future. While the novel is built around science fiction, time travel, and adventure, it also explores themes of love, leadership, sacrifice, collaboration, and purpose. After Bill's death, Ksenia returned to the manuscript and took on the work of helping bring his story into the world.

Creativity Became Part of Ksenia's Journey

As Ksenia worked on Ghostflower, she found herself drawn back into art and creative expression. She created artwork inspired by the story and developed a companion journal to accompany the novel. The process gave her a way to engage with Bill's work while also reconnecting with her own creativity. Ksenia has described feeling Bill's presence while creating, making the artwork an important part of how she continues to experience their connection.

Finding Joy Alongside Grief

The conversation with Stephanie also looks at the relationship between grief and joy. Ksenia's experience shows that moving forward does not necessarily mean leaving someone or their memories behind. Her work with Bill's books, her artwork, and the projects she continues through Merck II Press have given her opportunities to honor their relationship while creating something of her own. Rather than separating grief from the rest of life, she has found ways to make room for creativity, purpose, connection, and moments of joy alongside it.

A Story That Continues

For Ksenia, Ghostflower is closely connected to Bill's legacy, but the project has also become part of her own path. Through continuing his writing and developing new creative work, she is discovering what comes next while carrying forward the ideas and values they shared. Her conversation on Joy Found Here offers an honest look at love after loss and the different ways creativity can help us stay connected to meaningful parts of our lives.
