My life experiences in the years after a college class in which the professor asked, “What is your philosophy of life?” have allowed me to answer his question at last. When I contemplate all the inflection points in my life, I can see in this rear-view mirror how they cumulatively created my personal view of life, or my personal philosophy.

I have been fortunate to be around many interesting and influential people in my life, many of whom I mention in this book. The most significant people in my childhood were my parents, Gwen and Bill Merck, my aunt and uncle, Gerri and Ernie Demcheck, and my grandparents, Alma and Lowry Keefe. While writing and focusing on my upbringing, I became consciously aware of the exceptional impact Grandfather Keefe had on shaping my view of life, a man I spent considerable quality time with in those early years.
