Ksenia Merck on Widow 180: Grief, Creativity & “Relifing” After Loss

Navigating Grief After Profound Loss
Ksenia Merck joined Jennifer Zwink on the Widow 180 Podcast for an honest conversation about grief, caregiving, healing, and finding purpose after the loss of her husband, Bill. Before Bill’s passing, Ksenia had spent years caring for her mother, who lived to 102. When Bill became seriously ill, Ksenia found herself facing another difficult period of uncertainty and loss. His two-and-a-half-month hospitalization was deeply traumatic, and after his passing in March 2024, Ksenia had to navigate grief while also dealing with the lasting effects of that experience.
Finding a Way Forward Through Ghostflower

One of the most meaningful parts of Ksenia’s healing journey has been continuing Bill’s unfinished novel, Ghostflower. Bill had wanted the book published and had already begun discussing the artwork with Ksenia before his death. After taking care of the responsibilities that followed his passing, Ksenia returned to the manuscript and began creating the illustrations he had envisioned. What started as a commitment to complete his work became a deeply personal creative process. Through painting and sketching, Ksenia found a way to stay connected to Bill while rediscovering a part of herself that had been waiting to come forward.
“Relifing” Through Creativity and Purpose
During the conversation, Ksenia describes this chapter of her life as “relifing.” After spending years focused on her career, caregiving, and the needs of others, she began looking at her own life differently. Creating the artwork for Ghostflower, publishing the novel, and developing the Ghostflower Companion Journal gave her a renewed sense of purpose. She also speaks about learning to trust her intuition, protect her time and energy, and give herself permission to grieve without following someone else’s timeline. For Ksenia, healing has not meant forgetting Bill or moving away from their shared life—it has meant allowing herself to discover what comes next while carrying that connection with her.
Continuing Bill’s Legacy While Creating Her Own Path
Ksenia continues to build on the work she and Bill started through Merck II Press, including additional books, audiobooks, and creative projects. She hopes Ghostflower will eventually reach an even wider audience, including the possibility of becoming a film. Her conversation with Jennifer also offers an important reminder that grief looks different for everyone, and there is no fixed schedule for healing.
