During the episode, Merck reflects on the early moments that inspired the continuation of the project, including a sketch her husband, William F. Merck II, created while in the hospital. That drawing later became a meaningful symbol in the creative journey that followed. What began as an effort to honor his dream eventually grew into a collaborative-feeling process, where Merck says she often felt guided by his presence as she worked on the book’s illustrations and companion journal.

Merck also shares insight into the purpose behind the Ghost Flower Companion Journal, which invites readers to explore philosophical questions connected to the novel’s themes. Through reflections about time travel, humanity’s future, and personal purpose, the journal encourages readers to think deeply about their own choices and impact. The project blends storytelling, art, and introspection, offering readers a unique way to engage with the ideas presented in the novel.

A central theme of the conversation is the role of purpose in navigating grief. For Merck, working on the book and companion journal helped create direction during one of the most difficult periods of her life. The creative process became a way to transform loss into something meaningful while continuing to share the ideas and imagination that she and her husband valued.
